The Macallan Just Debuted An $18K Whiskey

Move over, champagne! The Macallan just debuted an $18K whiskey that is sure to make your celebration toast taste a little bit better. This new Fine & Rare 1989 was filled on December 12th 1989, and bottled in January 2022.

The 750 mL decanter retails for $18,500, while the 700 mL option goes for $17,300. So what makes this whiskey so special? Let’s take a look

A new part of the Fine and Rare collection

The Macallan Fine & Rare Collection is a selection of the finest and rarest single malt whisky that The Macallan has to offer. This collection contains some of the most prestigious and sought-after bottles, many of which are no longer in production.

First launched in 2002, the Fine & Rare Collection consists of 59 individual releases, each of which is unique and limited in supply. The collection spans a period of over 60 years, from the first release (a 1952 vintage) to the most recent release (a 1989 vintage).

The Fine & Rare Collection is highly sought after by collectors and whisky enthusiasts alike, due to its rarity and quality. In addition, each bottle in the collection has been hand-selected by The Macallan’s Master Whisky Maker, Kirsteen Campbell.

Commenting on the release, Campbell said:

The Macallan Fine & Rare Collection is inspired by our whisky-making legacy. It is the finest and rarest range of single malt whiskies in the world and reveals the mastery of wood and spirit, for which The Macallan has been renowned since 1824. These 59 unique vintages are products of nature’s gentle process, undisturbed for decades in sherry seasoned oak casks.”

What’s the presentation and flavour like?

The Macallan Fine & Rare 1989 comes in a walnut wood box with a brass inlay that was designed by Scottish furniture maker, Ross McInroy.

As for the whisky itself, The Macallan Fine & Rare 1989 has notes of dried fruits, wood smoke, and gingerbread. It’s said to have a long, complex finish with notes of Amaretti biscuits, dark chocolate, and orange zest.

If you’re looking to get your hands on a bottle of The Macallan Fine & Rare 1989, you’ll need to act fast as it will only be available at select bars, restaurants and premium retailers in the United States.
