The Lowlands region is the second largest region by area, but it only has 4 distilleries. The area is from the south of Scotland up to just north of Glasgow and Edinburgh where it meets the border of the Highlands region. The cut off runs along the old county border from the Clyde estuary in the West to the River Tay in the East.
Lowland whiskies we once all triple distilled but only Auchentoshan still employ the technique. Lowland malts are known as good entry level drams. Due to the Lowlands being inland, there is very little salinity and the malts also tend to be light, gentle and lack peatiness.
