The Highlands is the largest whisky producing region in Scotland by land mass, ranging from north of Glasgow up to Thurso and including areas from West to East (excluding the Speyside region). 25% of all whisky produced in Scotland comes from the Highland region. Due to the vast size of the region, there isn’t a common set of characteristics that determine overall Highland style whisky. However, if you categorise the Highlands into North, South, East and West you can determine each subregions’ style.
In the North you will find sweet, rich and full bodied single malts, with the South being lighter, fruitier with a bit less body. The East has characteristics very similar to the South, with the West producing full bodied peaty single malts, strongly influenced by the coast. Two of the main brands to come from the Highland region are Dalmore and Glenmorangie.
