About Campbeltown
The Campbeltown region is found at the foot of the Mull of Kintyre and is actually part of mainland Scotland. At its peak, the Campbeltown region was renowned for its whisky and was host to 34 distilleries. Today, the region is a shadow of its former self as there are now only 3 active distilleries. During the 1850’s the downfall of the Campbeltown region began. A combination of improved transport links to rival distilleries in other regions and mass produced poor quality whisky fuelled the fall from grace for Campbeltown.
The three remaining distilleries are Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glengyle with the latter only reopening in the early 2000’s. Despite the small size of the region and the close proximity of the distilleries, their taste profiles vary massively. Springbank offers smoky and robust whisky with Glen Scotia’s recent malt’s being grassy and light.
