The Tomatin distillery is located south of Inverness in the village of Tomatin, in the Highland region of Scotland. It has officially been operating since 1897 although it is believed that distilling took place on the site since the 16th century.
About Tomatin Distillery
The distillery is still active and is now owned by the Takara Shuzo Group. The current capacity is 5,000,000 litres and its’ water source is from the Alt-na-Frith Burn.
Until 1958 Tomatin operated on only two stills. An expansion took place over the years with stills gradually being added and by the 1970’s annual litres produced was up to 12.5 million. However, during the 1980’s some stills were dismantled and production was lowered by more than half to 5,000,000 litres. Over 80% of Tomatin whisky goes towards blends but in recent times they have made an effort to push their single malt range to be in keeping with current demand.
