The Macallan distillery is located in Craigellachie, Moray, which is in the Speyside region of Scotland. It was officially founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid when he had to obtain a license to operate legally under the new legislation.
About Macallan Distillery
The distillery is still active and is now owned by The Edrington Group. The current capacity is 15,000,000 litres and its’ water source is from various boreholes on The Macallan estate.
The Macallan was one of the first farm based distilleries in Speyside. For most of its history Macallan has provided malt for blending and only in the 1980’s did they start to produce single malt of their own. Due to Macallans’ collectability, fakes came onto the scene in the 1990’s. However, the subsequent investigation into the fakes lead to the establishment of certain methods that can be used to ensure authenticity of whisky. The Macallan used to solely use oak sherry casks but has added a Fine Oak range, utilising both oak sherry casks and bourbon oak casks.
