Benrinnes was founded under the name Lyne of Ruthrie when John Innes rebuilt it, but went bankrupt and was sold to William Smith who named it Benrinnes. The distillery was destroyed once again when it burned down in 1896. It was rebuilt and in the process modernised, using electricity for its power source.
