The Ardbeg distillery is located in Ardbeg, on the south coast of the isle of Islay. It has been operating commercially since 1815 but has been producing whisky since 1798, which is when John McDougall founded the distillery.

The distillery is still active and is now owned by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy). The current capacity is 1,250,000 litres and its’ water source is Loch Uigeadail. For most of its history Ardbeg produced whisky to be blended, as opposed to single malt. The whiskies Ardbeg produce are ranked high amongst the peatiest in the world.
Ardbeg stopped distilling in 1981 and returned to producing whisky in 1989, but only in a limited fashion. In 1997 the distillery was bought by Glenmorangie PLC with full production returning in 1998.
